Title : Portrait Painter
Posted Date : Dec 08, 2008
Portrait Painter

Technology and the Internet now make it possible for the average person to have a portrait. Hiring a traditional portrait painter is expensive and time consuming for the person sitting for a portrait. It is now possible to submit a photograph to a portrait painter online. The process requires several back and forth steps between the portrait painter and the person being painted. The portrait painter submits each stage of the portrait to the person, getting approval or redirection before moving on to the next step. Payment is usually made in portions as each step is satisfactorily completed.

With the technological advances in photography, why would the average person want a portrait painted? A portrait is much more than a realistic picture. A portrait is done once or perhaps a few times in a person’s life. A portrait painter captures the appearance and the essence of a person at a certain time in that person’s life. Whether the person is standing or sitting, whether the view is full body, waist high, or head and shoulders, and whether the person if facing or turned away from the portrait painter are all significant elements of what is being communicated.

Some portrait painters work for corporations, political organizations, and government agencies to paint formal portraits as a legacy for the business or agency instead of for the person. The portrait painter presents the person in a formal stance in formal clothes in a formal setting. The portrait may be a reward for promotion or an honor for retirement. However, the portrait remains with the business or agency. The portrait is part of the organization’s history and/or credibility. People who see the portrait see someone of strength, integrity, and power, which suggests that these qualities also apply to the organization.
Other portrait painters focus on personal portraits marking important points in the life of a person or of a family. These portraits are more interesting and varied. The portrait painter still attempts to capture the essence of the person, but the range is much broader on the personal level. Many couples or families have group portraits. The portrait painter not only focuses on body language and facial expression, but also reinforces the image through setting, clothes, and other objects in the portrait. Additional things can include everything from a pet to a religious icon to a favorite keepsake.
A successful portrait painter needs more than the ability to paint realistically. A knowledge of anatomy is important to accurately depict body positions, muscles flexing or in repose, the skeletal structure under the surface, and angles of the body. Since the goal of a portrait painter is capturing the person’s essence, the portrait painter must capture the expression of the eyes, the lift of the eyebrows. The portrait painter must understand the muscles that set the position of the mouth. While formal portraits are usually done in oils, personal portraits might be in oil, charcoal, watercolor, or pen and ink.
