| Child Care |
|
Child care – also known in parts of the world as babycare, childcare and daycare – is the profession involving the taking care of and the supervising young children. In traditional western societies, children are normally cared for by one or both parents. But because the majority of households featuring two full-time working parents, the need exists for full-time child care. This comes in the form of Au Pairs (young, foreign girls employed to live with and tend to the children and do housework), nannies and day care centers, also known as crèches in the United Kingdom and British territories.

Au Pairs and nannies allow for a family's child, or children allow for family child care in their home. These child care providers are responsible for dressing the children, preparing meals and transporting them to school or to other activities. Their services also can provide infant child care. In some cases, parents choose to employ a member of the extended family, such as a grandmother, aunt or cousin in a similar full-time fashion. Full-time child care facilities or childcare centers are generally geared toward pre-school-aged children, but they also provide before and after school child care.

Although paid childcare is a deemed a need for families with two working parents, the debate over the pros and cons of childcare has raged on for years. Both sides agree the earliest years of life are very critical for defining the character and potential of an individual. But some believe a parent's care is most beneficial. And some studies have concluded that professional childcare facilities owned by large corporations offer a lower quality of care than privately-run centers. The pro-childcare debaters contend the social interaction and classroom setting of childcare centers better benefit children in the future.

In the United States, commercial child care services are generally run and overseen by teachers who have earned at least associate degrees in Child Development. Bachelor and Master degrees also are offered in Early Childhood Education. Some states require continued education or certification of childcare providers working for daycare centers. And some child care facilities require their workers attend annual workshops to improve their knowledge and skill of childcare. Many jurisdictions require child care centers to meet licensing and regulation requirements while also passing inspections. These requirements don't apply to small daycare operations run out of an individual's home, however. |
|
Child care costs vary depending on most areas. Some family organizations, however, lobby for free childcare or at least childcare regulations that would allow for tax breaks or allowances for parents who must pay for childcare whether it be at a facility or administered by a full-time child care provider in their own home. The majority of countries have childcare laws that are geared toward punishing and preventing child abuse. Having to meet the requirements of those laws often increase the cost of running a child care facility, but such laws also help to ensure quality child care programs. |
