| Garbage/Recycling |
Waste management involves the collecting, transporting, processing and recycling or disposal of materials. The term normally is relative to materials produced by humans and is an action taken to reduce negative impacts on health and environment. Waste management can involve solid, liquid, gaseous or radio active substances, and different methods and fields of expertise are applied to each for the disposal there of. Waste or garbage is generally disposed of in a landfill and involves burying the refuse to dispose of it. Landfills are normally established in abandoned or unused quarries, mining voids or borrowed pits. Properly designed and managed landfills are hygienic and relatively inexpensive. |

| But to minimize the negative impact to the environment, the practice of recycling is encouraged. Recycling is the process of extracting from the garbage resources that have value, and finding ways to reuse the material. There are numerous ways of processing recyclable material. And new methods are constantly being developed. A common method of garbage recycling involves the collection of steel scraps that are sorted and baled for recycling. Another popular method of garbage recycling involves the collection of materials such as emptied beverage and food containers of plastic, glass and tin. The bottles, jars and cartons are placed in garbage recycling bins. |
| In localities that provide city garbage removal services, residents place these recyclable products in special bags, often designated by a specific color, and on an appointed day, set them out on the street corner. The recycling service then picks up the bags, takes them back to the recycling center and the items are then sorted into specific categories: often clear glass, green or brown glass, plastic, cartons, tin, aluminum and cardboard. Other localities set up recycling collection centers with large garbage recycling bins are set up where the residents can sort their own products and place them in specific garbage recycling containers. |

While the most common consumer products that are recycled are aluminum cans, tin food and aerosol cans, bottles, jars, cardboard and paperboard cartons along with newspapers and magazines, other types of plastic – such as PVC, LDPE, PP and PS – also are able to be recycled. They aren't commonly collected, however. They normally are composed of a single type of material and are relatively easy to be recycled into new products. Other items that can be recycled include computers and electronic equipment, but they are more difficult to recycle because they require dismantling and separation. |
Garbage recycling is an important method of waste management because it prevents extra waste in that the materials can be used again rather than new containers – leading to additional garbage – to have to be produced. Methods of avoiding waste include the reuse of second-hand products, repairing broken items rather than buying new ones, designing containers to be refillable or reusable (cotton instead of plastic shopping bags) or encouraging customers to avoid using disposal products (like plastic forks, spoons and knives) and designing containers that require the use of less material while serving the same purpose also are helpful in the effort towards garbage recycling. |
