Karate is a martial art in which sharp blows and kicks are administered to pressure-sensitive points on the body of an opponent. It is primarily a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes and open-handed techniques best learned through Karate lessons. Grappling, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point strikes are taught during karate lessons in some styles. Karate can be practiced as budo (emphasis is on self-development), as a sport, as a combat sport, or as self defense training. Karate lessons for kids as well as adults emphasize the psychological elements incorporated into a proper kokoro (attitude) such as perseverance, fearlessness, virtue, and leadership skills. Sport karate places emphasis on exercise and competition. |

Shotokan Karate of America is a nonprofit organization that has been teaching traditional karate-do in the United States since 1955; providing karate lessons for kids and adults. The modernization and systemization of karate in Japan also included the adoption of the white uniform that consisted of the kimono and the dogi or keikogi—mostly called just karategi—and colored belt ranks. One of the highlights of kids’ karate lessons is graduating to a new colored belt upon accomplishing requirements of karate lessons. Colors vary from school to school. Both of the kimono and the colored belts were designed in an effort to modernize karate and karate lessons in general. |
