| Plastic Surgery (Cosmetic) |
|
Cosmetic plastic surgery is a surgical procedure focusing mainly on the correction of specific body parts. Although cosmetic surgery (plastic surgery) differs from reconstructive plastic surgery in the sense that cosmetic plastic surgeons are primarily concerned with aesthetics, there may be a restoration of function as well. The term "plastic surgery" does not actually come from synthetic materials believed to be used in the surgeries, but rather the Greek word "plastikos," meaning "to mold or shape." Although synthetic materials (although not necessarily plastic) are still used in many aesthetic surgeries, a wide variety of cosmetic surgeries are completed by simply using living tissue from either the affected body part or other areas on the patient's body. |

The widest selection available in cosmetic plastic surgery pertains to the augmentation of facial features. Cosmetic facial plastic surgery typically involves either adding fat or collagen-based injections to wrinkles or thin areas, or pulling skin tighter. Laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, and collagen (or fat or other tissues) injections are available for patients concerned with wrinkles or the thinning of lips or cheeks. A more drastic change available for those with wrinkles in need of cosmetic facial plastic surgery is a rhytidectomy- a face lift. Cheek augmentation can also be done for wrinkles, but generally involves moving extra tissues into the cheekbones to provide a fuller face, as thin faces tend to show aging more vividly.

For those patients in need of facial reconstruction but who are not necessarily concerned with wrinkles, plastic and cosmetic surgery can reshape nearly any facial feature to whatever size and outline a patient desires. Rhinoplasty (a nose job) is a reshaping of the nose that is commonly carried out by cosmetic surgeons. Similarly, patients in need of a smaller or larger chin can seek chin augmentation. This involves either a silicone implant into the chin, or gentle sliding or scraping of the jawbone. Cosmetic ear surgery is known as otoplasty and is commonly done to people concerned with overtly large or pointy ears.

n addition to facial reconstructions, there are also very common procedures available at any cosmetic plastic surgery center relating to the chest and abdomen. Abdominoplasty (a tummy tuck) is available to reshape the abdomen or abdominal etching can be done to contour fat pads to make a stomach look flatter and more muscular. Breast augmentations and reductions can be carried out on women looking for either larger breasts or smaller breasts. Breast augmentations often involve implants, mastopexies (breast lifts) remove excess skin around the breasts, and breast reductions involves removing tissues. Buttock augmentation can also be carried out to move implants or fat from elsewhere on the body into the buttocks. Liposuction (the removal of fat) can be done on nearly any fatty part of the body, but comes with more cosmetic plastic surgery risks.

Cosmetic plastic surgery costs are generally not covered by insurance and can sometimes reach astronomical prices. Patients may have luck filing an insurance claim stating that the surgery is necessary for an improved quality of life, although this is typically reserved for breast reconstruction after mastectomies (which is normally categorized as a reconstructive surgery) or breast reductions for patients with severe back or shoulder pain. Over the past twenty years, an increasing amount of people have travelled to countries such as Thailand, Argentina, India and some places in eastern Europe to find a less costly cosmetic plastic surgery clinic. In reality, this choice is extremely dangerous; there are significantly more cosmetic plastic surgery risks and little to no post-surgery follow-ups.
