The term alternative medicine, as used in the modern western world, encompasses any healing practice "that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine.” Commonly cited examples[2] include naturopathy, chiropractic, herbalism, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, meditation, yoga, biofeedback, hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture, and diet-based therapies, in addition to a range of other alternative medicine treatments. Alternative medicine practitioners are as diverse in their foundations as in their methodologies. And, to be sure, an alternative medicine doctor may also be a conventional doctor. Beause, over time, to some degree, alternative medicines have made their way into conventional practice. |

| An example of that is the conventional use of leeches to clear out ear canals and eat encrusted scabs. That used to be an alternative medicine treatment, called an alternative natural medicine treatment exclusively. There is an alternative medicine treatment for almost any disease. There’s arthritis alternative medicine, asthma alternative medicine, diabetes alternative medicine and even cancer alternative medicine treatment. Alternative medicine also includes alternative herbal medicine and holistic alternative medicine used by alternative medicine doctors. Practices may incorporate or base themselves on traditional medicine, folk knowledge, spiritual beliefs, or newly conceived approaches to healing[8]. Jurisdictions where alternative medical practices are sufficiently widespread may license and regulate them. |

What are considered complementary or alternative medicine treatments in one country may be considered conventional medical practices in another. Therefore, one definition is broad and general: complementary medicine includes all such practices and ideas which are outside the domain of conventional medicine in several countries and defined by its users as preventing or treating illness, or promoting health and well-being. Another alternative natural medicine is aromatherapy used by alternative medicine practitioners and alternative medicine doctors. Holistic alternative medicine is defined as: An approach to medical care that emphasizes the study of all aspects of a person's health, including physical, psychological, social, economic, and cultural factors.

Using this definition, all alternative medicines and practices could be also treated holistically. That would include arthritis alternative medicine, asthma alternative medicine, diabetes alternative medicine and even cancer alternative medicine. David M. Eisenberg defines it as "medical interventions not taught widely at US medical schools or generally available at US. hospitals," while Richard Dawkins sardonically defines it as a "set of practices which cannot be tested, refuse to be tested, or consistently fail tests." Dawkins attitude is still the mindset of most conventional doctors. They even refuse to believe that Chiropractors are actual or real medical practitioners.

Alternative herbal medicine has been used by Native Americans and indigenous peoples throughout the world since time immemorial. Many an alternative medicine doctor uses herbal treatments. To say that they are not effective under any circumstances just because they have not been subjected to rigorous medical studies is to go too far. There are probably many herbal medicines that have some medicinal value. Indeed, many modern drugs were derived from natural herbal components. The combination of orthodox and complementary medicine, or alternative medicine, and even holistic alternative medicine with an emphasis on prevention and lifestyle changes is known as integrated medicine.
