Personal Improvement
Self-help or self improvement is the term used to describe self-guided improvement whether it be in the area of finances, intellectualism or emotion, which is most often on a psychological or spiritual self improvement level. Self improvement is often easily found through information that is available publicly, through support groups, which feature people going through similar situations. These self improvement support groups can cater to a wide range of needs, from depression, to addiction, to spiritual or financial struggles. When these groups get together, members share their experiences and how they themselves are striving toward self improvement.
People often seek self-help through reading self help books or self help articles. Self-help literature dates as far back as 2500 B.C. And is a testament to numerous fundamental human needs. The advice poetry of Hesiod is viewed as an early adaptation of self-improvement literature. Samuel Smiles, who lived from 1812 to 1904 published the first self-improvement book, entitled Self-Help, in 1859. It's opening sentence says “Heaven helps those who help themselves,” from which was derived the popular saying “God helps them that help themselves,” which is often repeated by those seeking self-improvement.
Dale Carnegie (1888-1955) is believed by many to have kick-started the whole self-help/self improvement movement in the 20th century when he published the book How to Win Friends and Influence People in 1936. He himself had failed several careers and became fascinated with success and it's link to self-confidence. So he studied the subject for years and cultivated ways to improve self-improvement itself refining self improvement techniques and self improvement tips. His books have sold more than 50 million copies. Napoleon Hill, another self-help author, believed using repeated positive thoughts to attract happiness and wealth.
The expansion of the world's technology has empowered individuals to increasingly find ways to cultivate their power of self improvement. Self improvement book publishing took off as printing technologies have improved, and now there are whole, extensive collections of self improvement ebooks. Self-Improvement eBooks is a Web Site dedicated solely to the marketing and sale of self-improvement books, offering a wide range of topics for which individuals seek self improvement. And the Internet, with its ever-expanding collection of information services, offers many self improvement articles and self improvement books that can be obtained.
One of the most popular and most successful self-improvement support groups is Alcoholics Anonymous – known in short as AA – which was started by two alcoholics, Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith. The informal meeting society is for people who identify themselves as alcoholics and seek to conquer their addiction. By abstaining from alcohol and following AA's spiritual program of action and sharing their experiences, strengths and weaknesses, they complete a 12-step program while seeking to rid themselves of the disease. AA was the first 12-step program, but has now been used as a model for similar self improvement groups.
