"Black tie events" require that men arrive dressed in a formal tuxedo and woman are expected to wear an evening gown, or sometimes, a formal cocktail dress. Although there are few companies that specialize in renting out women's evening gowns, tuxedo rentals are fairly easy to come by. Most tuxedos sell for more than $300, and given the rare occurrences in which most men wear extremely formal attire, they can be a significant waste of money. The term "tuxedo" is used with various meanings in different parts of the western world, but for the most part, refers to the most formal suit a man wears.

| Unlike the strictly regulated "white tie" dress code, black tie apparel has slight variations in colors and styles. The jackets and pants combination is typically black or a very dark blue and is usually made of a wool or wool blend. These jackets can be extremely hot, but are not to be taken off in formal situations unless explicitly demonstrated to do so. In very warm climates or outdoor summer events, the white jacket is an acceptable substitution, as the light color traps less heat than darker jackets. Jackets are typically single-breasted, but double-breasted jackets are acceptable alternatives. Lapels are typically silk or satin (with matching braids in the trousers) and are either a shawl collar or peak lapel. Tuxedo rental companies will have a variety of jackets available, although companies specializing in specifically prom tuxedo rentals may only have single-breasted jackets, as they are considered more modern. |

For accessories within a tuxedo, a man must wear a white dress shirt with either a pleated, marcella, or (occasionally) stiff front, as well as a silk tie with a matching silk vest. Traditionally, the tie is a black silk bow tie, although more modern conventions allow metallic colors and straight ties. Rental tuxedos include a cummerbund; a low-cut waistcoat is usually an acceptable alternative. Formal tuxedo rentals will sometimes include black shoes (most commonly in patent leather), but do not ordinarily offer silk dress socks for rental. Most tuxedos rentals facilities sell matching dress socks within the store.

Accent colors within tuxedos are typically kept to very subtle colors and are always monochromatic. The only acceptable places for color include the vest and tie, as well as a handkerchief (worn on the front of the jacket) and a matching boutonnière. After hours tuxedo rentals will typically request that a man provide a swatch of color matching his date's dress or the dress itself. The accent color chosen is always the closest shade to the date's dress, to further benefit her appearance. The muted subtleties of a formal tuxedo are crucial, as the women within the party should stand out much more than the men. |

The most subtle tuxedos are apparent in weddings, and therefore, choosing an accent color is not an issue in wedding tuxedo rentals (Las Vegas weddings may sometimes be an exception if a theme is present). The tuxedos worn by groomsmen may accent the bridesmaid's dresses, but it is not always acceptable for a male guest to accent his date's dress. This convention is changing with more modern tuxedo suit rentals. Within a wedding tuxedo rental facility, tuxedo vest rentals are usually an option, if a man already has the main components of his suit. When dressing for a wedding, particularly if the groomsmen are renting their suits, it is always a good idea to make the tuxedo rental business aware of the wedding; many places provide discounts for group rentals.
